Plot

Lauren Oliver has done it again! Just when you think there is no way she can write another book that will make you love her even more, she writes a Broken Things. Hold on because this one is a roller coaster that pulls at the mind and the heart. Being an Oliverian (fan of Lauren Oliver), I can attest that this is indeed one of her best work yet.

This is a suspenseful, mystery-thriller that follows two friends (Brynn and Mia) into the discovery the murder of their best friend, Summer. The story is slowly built with flashbacks and clues in from the frame story Lovelorn which the three friends were obsessed with. In due times as you read along, you start to see all the puzzles click together not just for who the murder is but who the characters are.

Characters

Brynn: is the sarcastic lesbian who had a crush of Summer. After Summer's death she has been keeping herself in a rehab institute.

Mia: the shy and quiet of the three and had a crush of Summer's boyfriend, and after Summer's death she moved on.

Summer: though she may be dead, her voice is still heard throughout the story. She is a tough little cookie to fully love.

Setting

There was not much emphasis on the physical setting. The atmosphere, however, was the best quality of the story because it was both creepy, mysterious, and melancholy. It’s what gets you on the edge, wanting to know who done it.

Writing

The writing adds to the suspense and thrilling aspect of the entire story. It was slow yet sweet, it gave me chills. The ability to write a story while alternating between characters and timeline and being able to keep everything structured and not confusing is a power which only a few have mastered.

Negative Points:

As much as it pains me to find any fault with Oliver and her books, alas I did found some smidget things that bothered me. The beginning of the story was the main attraction, but as the story moved along it started to lag causing me to become disinterested.

Overall

I highly recommend this story to lovers of mystery, thriller, murder and friendship.
