Plot:
A Touch of Gold is a fresh and wild retelling of Midas and his gold. To those unfamiliar with the original story, here is a super short version: King Midas made a wish to god Dionysus for everything he touched to be turned into gold, obviously King Midas did not think his wish through, so when Dionysus granted the wish Midas soon realized his wish is actually a curse.
This retelling however is centered on King Midas's daughter along with the physical and emotional effect of her father's curse had on her and those around her. The story was nice wrapping of pirates, sirens, friendship, betrayal, treasure, the sea, and gold.
The story was structure well with action where needs be keeping the story from lagging and the pacing was set amicable-not to fast or too slow, but just right. The romance was unrealistic with no chemistry between the characters which was a let down for me because I am a fan of all things romance. The twists and unexpected turn of events left me with a raised eyebrow and kept me reading.
Setting:
There was an unfathomable lack of world-building. The story gave little snippets here and there, but it was not enough for my mind to fully conjure up the image the story tried to depict. It is difficult to read a story if I cannot see where characters are.
Characters
Kora: I sympathized with her on a 'lonely' level. She makes me want to cradle her and protect her from the world. She is naive which makes sense because she is someone who was never exposed to the outside world because of her 'curse.' However, I would have liked to see some character development from her where she is less innocent.
Hettie: compared to Kora, Hettie is what you would call a foil character. She is more open, out-spoken and less restrictive. She is easily my favorite character because, honestly, without her the story would not have been bland. She adds that je ne sais quoi to the story.
Royce and Aris: this two lads are the supposedly the heartthrobs of the story. I am unsure of what what to write about this two because they did not interest me one bit, so when you read this book do or think what you may about them.
Writting:
The light coming in from the stained glass windows reflects off the silver of golden skin visible in the gasp between my gloves and sleeves.
Expressed in first person, the story was written beautifully. The writing itself lacked nothing. It was simple to understand yet not to the point where it pokes fun of reader's intellectual ability to read. to challenge readers with some of its diction.
Overall:
In the name of all things Greek mythology, I deem this book worthy to be read all.
